About Cairn

    The people behind the writing.

Cairn is built on lived experience and primary-source research. Every article tells you who wrote it, what they know, and how it was checked.

    Norm Barrette

    Founder, writer, product

Norm Barrette built Cairn after navigating his own Ontario separation. The content here reflects how the Ontario family-law system actually works for the men inside it — the year-one decisions, the cash flow, the parenting plan, the document trail — written in plain language without the lawyer-speak. Every article is researched against primary sources: the Divorce Act, the Family Law Act, the Federal Child Support Guidelines, the Spousal Support Advisory Guidelines, the Family Law Rules, and Ontario court-published materials.

How we research and check the content

    Primary sources only
Every legal claim cites a primary source — a statute, regulation, court rule, or government publication. We link directly to the source where it has a stable public URL (justice.gc.ca, ontario.ca, ontariocourtforms.on.ca, canlii.org, stepstojustice.ca).
    Information, not advice
Cairn provides plain-language legal information so men can prepare. We do not provide legal advice and we are not a law firm. Independent Legal Advice from an Ontario family-law lawyer or paralegal is required before signing a separation agreement, and we say so every time.
    Annual review
Every published article is reviewed each January for tax-year currency, law changes, and broken external links. Posts that fall out of date are either refreshed or marked accordingly.
    Corrections welcome
If you spot a factual error or an out-of-date citation, email norm@cairnguide.ca with the URL and what's off. We fix on confirmation — usually the same day.

Want to contribute? Cairn welcomes Ontario-licensed family-law professionals (paralegals or lawyers in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario) who can review specific content areas. Email norm@cairnguide.ca with your scope and credentials.
