About Cairn
Built from lived experience.
A cairn is a stack of stones hikers leave on a hard trail to mark the way for whoever's coming next. Cairn the site is the same thing, for men working through separation in Ontario.

Norm — founder, Cairn
From the founder
I built the guide I couldn't find when I needed it.
Two and a half years into my own separation, I settled — not because the outcome felt right, but because I needed it to be over. When the final court order was in my hand, I looked back at what it had cost me. My savings were gone. And I couldn't honestly say I was better off than if I'd figured it out on my own — if there had been a way to figure it out on my own.
At the start, I'd believed a good lawyer would be enough. That I'd be okay because I was a good person who wanted the best for my children. What I learned, the hard way, is that a lawyer handles a piece of it. The rest — your finances, where you'll live, who you are without the marriage, who's going to help you get to the other side — that was on me to figure out under the worst conditions of my life. I wanted something that laid out the whole path, so I wouldn't have to struggle from one chapter to the next, blindsided every time.
My career has been in healthcare — helping people through crisis and through the major challenges life puts in front of them. Building Cairn was the same instinct, applied to something I'd just survived. If it helps one man avoid what I went through, the work is more than justified.
"Being right or doing the right thing isn't enough. Don't sell your future self short. An intentional plan shapes who you become on the other side more than any single action made in isolation. Living in acute stress makes long-term planning feel almost impossible. It isn't."
What Cairn is
The whole separation, not just the legal part.
Based on what you tell us, Cairn builds a personalized plan and explains how the Ontario legal process works — so you're prepared, not directed. It covers what a lawyer handles and everything a lawyer doesn't: your kids, your financial footing, your wellbeing, and the life you're building on the other side.
The mission is simple: give every man in Ontario going through this the same quality of information — regardless of what he can afford or how complicated his situation is.
What we stand for
Five things we don't compromise on.
- Honest scope. Cairn is a guide, not a lawyer — said in plain language alongside every piece of content, not buried in fine print.
- Plain language. No legalese. No jargon. If you can't act on it, it isn't guidance — it's noise.
- Access. Your situation, your plan — visible for free, regardless of what you can afford.
- No alarm. Hard realities, clearly explained. Calm, grounded, direct. The process is hard enough.
- The whole person. Not just the steps to a signed agreement — your kids, finances, daily routine, and sense of yourself.
How we work with professionals
We get you ready for them. We don't replace them.
When a man needs a legal professional, the goal is that he arrives prepared — clear on the issues, organized on his finances, not starting from zero at $400 an hour. Cairn works alongside Ontario family law paralegals, mediators, Certified Divorce Financial Analysts, and Licensed Insolvency Trustees.
Cairn provides legal information — general guidance on what Ontario family law says and how the process works. It does not provide legal advice, which only a licensed professional can give. The full calculator methodology documents the rules, citations, and cross-validation behind every Cairn number.
Who comes to Cairn
Different starting points. Same path forward.
- Some men come the week their relationship ends — looking for something solid to hold onto and a sign that this is survivable.
- Some come because they have children, and they know how they handle this will shape that relationship for the rest of their lives. They want a clear path, not adversarial strategy.
- Some come because the financial side is complex — a business, a pension, property, equity comp — and they want to understand it before they walk into a professional's office.
- Some come because they've watched a friend lose years and most of his savings to a process that didn't have to go that way. They're choosing to do it differently.
Whatever brought you here — you're on the right path.
